Leg/Spider Veins

Spider veins, not to be confused with varicose veins, are dilated or stretched blood vessels that have a branching pattern and are commonly found on the thigh, lower leg, ankle and occasionally on the face. Spider veins pop up near the surface of the skin and have a web-like appearance. Spider veins are progressive in nature and usually increase in number and visibility with age. Varicose veins are enlarged veins that can be blue, red, or flesh-colored. They often look like cords and appear twisted and bulging.

Varicose veins are not effectively treated with sclerotherapy or with lasers. We treat only spider veins.

Sclerotherapy and laser therapy are the two primary treatments for spider veins.

Sclerotherapy is the most common vein treatment option and is often called the Gold Standard treatment for spider veins. It is safe, fast and effective. It is called the Gold Standard treatment because it works efficiently to eliminate ugly spider veins.

Sclero is a procedure where a sclerosing solution (sodium tetradecyl sulfate) is injected into the vein with a micro-needle which causes the vein to shrink, turn white (blanch) and then metabolized by the body over the next 8 – 12 weeks. We have a compression stocking that regiment that we recommend you follow to gain optimal results.

Lasers are typically used to treat smaller veins that occur on the face, but are sometimes used on sensitive areas like the ankle. The most common lasers used to treat spider veins are the Vbeam Perfecta and Nd YAG laser system.

We have performed many vein treatment procedures. During your consultation, we will spend time with you to answer your questions. We will examine you and take a full medical history to ensure you are a good candidate and make recommendations as to which method will work best for you.
